For the third year in a row, the company earned recognition for its commitment to creating a culture of environmental awareness.
BRAMPTON, ON., APRIL 19, 2021 – Canon Canada Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce that it has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2021. This is the third consecutive year that the company received recognition for being one of the country’s leaders in creating a culture of environmental awareness.
Environmental awareness – and being part of something bigger – is built into the company’s corporate philosophy, Kyosei: all people, regardless of race, religion or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future.
“Canon Canada is proud to foster a culture of environmental responsibility,” says Nobuhiko Kitajima, President and CEO of Canon Canada. “Sustainability is a key component in the decisions we make in our day-to-day operations and we have remained committed to this, even as the how and where we work has changed this year due to COVID-19. Our continued inclusion as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers reinforces the positive steps we’ve taken and inspires us to keep doing our part to create a sustainable future for not only our employees but also our larger communities.”
Now in its 14th year, Canada’s Greenest Employers is an editorial competition organized by the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project in partnership with the Globe and Mail. The editors evaluate and select the recipients based on four sets of criteria:
Major Features of Canon Canada’s Environmental Initiatives include:
LEED® Gold for New Construction and Major Renovations 2009 certification for its corporate headquarters, located in Brampton, Ontario. Surrounded by expansive, community-accessible green space, the building includes elements that encourage collaboration, foster well-being and promote practices that reduce its carbon footprint.
State-of-the-art Brampton Headquarters designed to reflect the company’s commitment to sustainability, with features including energy-efficient lighting throughout the building and a rooftop greywater system. A partnership with Earth Rangers, a kids’ environmental and conservation organization that shares the company’s commitment to environmental education and responsibility in Canadian youth. With Canon Canada’s support, 6,600 kids participated in Earth Rangers’ Pollinator Power Mission, learning how to create pollinator habitats in their backyards or on their patios and balconies. In the fall, the organization launched its Canon-sponsored Habitat Helper program, which engages elementary school eco-clubs in creating places for animals to sleep, feed and nest.
The Canon Canada Environmental Studies Scholarship, presented annually for the next five years to students at York University and the University of British Columbia. The scholarships will help the universities provide financial assistance to students pursuing careers committed to sustainability and protecting the environment.
Branch Out, a volunteer initiative that gives employees the opportunity to spend multiple workdays creating green spaces and sustainable environments around the communities where they work and live. In 2019, employees celebrated the program’s sixth year and volunteered nearly 1,700 hours to assist 23 environmental projects in 12 cities. In 2020, unable to execute the program due to COVID-19, the company fulfilled its organization commitment to environmental programs by providing financial assistance to two partners – Credit Valley Conservation and Trout Unlimited Canada – who continued to do great work in the communities they serve.
The Canon Green Team, a company-wide, cross-departmental committee dedicated to initiating, reviewing and enhancing Canon Canada’s environmental initiative, as well as promoting enviro-consciousness among employees. One big initiative the team has spearheaded is the installation of hydration water stations in the staff cafeteria at the Brampton headquarters. When employees return to the office, the stations will eliminate 8,000 plastic water bottles and 3,000 single-use plastic straws from landfills each year.
Electronics recycling programs that encourage employees to responsibly recycle their no-longer-needed electronics. In 2020, Canon Canada hosted drive-thru curbside events at four of its offices, where employees diverted nearly 430 kilograms of consumer electronics from landfills. Over the past three years, employees have diverted almost 2,800 kilograms of consumer electronics and textiles from landfills. Dedicated drop-off bins for used batteries, toner cartridges and electronics will continue to be set up at multiple locations across the country when offices fully reopen.
Participation in multiple electronics stewardship programs across the country, including the Canadian Stewardship Services Alliance, Éco Enterprises Québec and Electronics Products Stewardship Canada.
International ISO 14001 Certification at multiple offices across Canada. The standard certifies Canon Canada has implemented, maintained and constantly enhanced its environment management system, and ensured it meets or exceeds all environmental compliance obligations.
A Green Procurement Policy that ensures the company procures parts, products and services from vendors who are in line with Canon Canada’s commitment to the environment and sustainability.
This year’s Greenest Employer honour follows Canon Canada’s recognition as Most Environmentally Progressive Technology Company (Gold Award, Canadian Printing Awards, 2019), the company receiving the Healthy Workplace Award from the Brampton Board of Trade (2019 Business Excellence Awards), and Branch Out being recognized by Canada’s Clean50 Top Project Awards (Delta Management Group and the Canada’s Clean50 organization).
