Earlier this month, Canon Canada Medical Systems was invited to Parliament Hill by Diabetes Canada to take part in a diabetes-awareness showcase for government officials, Members of Parliament and Senators. The opportunity was initiated by Sonia Sidhu, the Member of Parliament for Brampton South, and a passionate advocate for diabetes awareness, which she champions in her role as the Chair of the All-Party Diabetes Caucus.
For the showcase, members of Canon Canada’s Medical Systems team travelled to Ottawa with Dr. Ben Szirth, a medical consultant for Canon Canada Inc., as well as the director of the Applied Vision Research Laboratory at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the program director of the Ophthalmic Telemedicine Program for the State of New Jersey. The team promoted Canon’s lineup of medical devices, including its advanced diagnostic eye-care equipment. They set up a retinal screening station in the chambers next to the House of Commons that included the CR-2 PLUS AF, a digital non-mydriatic retinal camera, and the OCT-HS100, a fully automated spectral domain OCT ophthalmoscope.
People often approach a Canon booth because they’ve never seen a retinal scan before. A retinal scan shows more than meets the eye. “It’s one of the only non-invasive procedures to show what’s going on inside the body,” says David Seeley, Senior Manager of the Medical Systems team. That means a Canon eye-care system can detect not just diabetic retinopathy and other vision-threatening diseases such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, but also indications of previous concussion trauma and hypertension. “The consistent theme in the medical world is how early detection helps manage or slow down the effects of disease. Canon technology helps with that detection and aids medical professionals in the management of their patients’ healthcare needs.”
For Canon Canada, the event was an opportunity to not only promote their medical imaging products but also actively demonstrate Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei and helping others by living and working together for the common good.
